Birdwatcher from Australia –
Seeing the black-necked cranes gracefully glide into Phobjikha Valley was a surreal moment, but pairing that with the festival’s cultural significance took it to the next level. The dances performed by villagers and school kids told the story of the cranes’ importance in local mythology and ecology. The atmosphere was festive yet respectful, and the scenic backdrop of the valley added to the magic. The festival not only honors the birds but also raises awareness about protecting them — and it does so in such a heartfelt way. This was a unique eco-cultural experience I’ll never forget.
