As a filmmaker, the Punakha Festival was one of the most visually and emotionally powerful events I’ve documented. From the flowing costumes and spinning dancers to the giant masks and chanting monks, every moment was cinematic. The Punakha Drubchen, with its live-action storytelling and warrior scenes, gave me dynamic footage and cultural depth. I was also able to capture the unfurling of the Thongdrel at sunrise — the golden light against the ancient tapestry and the crowd’s silence was deeply moving. Bhutan has preserved its traditions beautifully, and this festival showcases it all. For any creative or storyteller, this is an event full of meaning and magic.
